My first job was in an emergency department, and my supervisor told me that a lot of my decisions were going to tick off either my own team members or the patients that came to us. "If you don't get called a b*tch at least once a shift, you're probably not doing your job," she told me.

I don't know if I developed a thick skin, but I learned to sit quietly during verbal abuse and think, "What's really going on under all that?" I learned that if I responded to the underlying feelings more than I responded to the words themselves, I could usually diffuse the situation. And by the end of my time in the ER, I was doing my job perfectly well and rarely got called the "B" word.

Debra Stang
Alliant Professional Networking SpecialistDebra Stanghttp://www.ce-psychology.com/psychopharm.htmlnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4914035434631090544.post-64528356969228933742010-11-09T18:13:34.463-08:002010-11-09T18:13:34.463-08:00Emily,

I've found having some who understands the work to be priceless. I truly believe God has sent those people into my life to help remind me why I do this job. And don't forget to look for the 'little things' - a good session with a client, praise from a coworker, one family holding it together despite the circumstances - they are what keeps me going. I don't try to change the whole world now though, just the world as it is for some people, in some ways and you know, sometimes, more than sometimes, that is enough. We can't do everything but we can change the harshness and injustices for some people at some times and you know, that's enough for me.
